Russia recently passed draconian anti-LGBT laws that actually make it illegal to be gay or to be "pro-gay" in Russia. That means that right now people in Russia can be arrested simply for being gay, or for publicly supporting LGBT rights.
The egregious human rights violation has tragic implications for LGBT Russians and their allies. It also has terrifying implications for any LGBT Olympians or advocates traveling to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
This kind of anti-LGBT action is absolutely unacceptable for an Olympic host nation. Olympic athletes should be worried about competing and representing their country, NOT if they'll end up in jail for who they love.
With only a short time left before the games begin, the International Olympic Committee must act now to ensure no LGBT athlete faces persecution or arrest in Russia, simply for being themselves.
Join me in calling on the International Olympic Committee stand up against Russia's violation of essential human rights and officially condemn any attempts by Russia to violate the rights of LGBT Olympians!
Thank you for all you do,
