On Wednesday – the very day that the Sea Turtle Restoration Project kicked off a global week of action for justice – Costa Rican police authorities arrested eight people suspected in the murder of sea turtle activist Jairo Mora Sandoval.
The arrests came shortly after the Sea Turtle Restoration Project delivered our petition calling for justice for Jairo to Costa Rica consulate offices in eight countries. The petition has been signed by over 137,000 supporters from over 150 countries and it just keeps growing.

More Information on the Week of Action July 31-August 7 We're already off to a great start! On July 31, coalition members delivered our petition to authorities in Costa Rica and to Costa Rican consulates in the United States, El Salvador, Ecuador, India, and Australia. Petition deliveries are planned in more countries throughout the week. Your help is needed now to apply additional pressure - help our petition increase to 200,000 supporters! More Information on the Apprehension of Suspects in Jairo's Murder We are relieved that arrests have been made, but we must remain vigilant to ensure that the right people have been arrested, and are brought to justice. The arrests come two months after Sandoval and four women were kidnapped while protecting nesting leatherback sea turtles. The four women were robbed, but escaped and called police. Police claim the suspects arrested are part of an organized gang involved in robberies of tourists and other local citizens, and that cell phones taken from the sea turtle conservationists were recovered. Thank you again for all your help! For the turtles and all endangered marine wildlife,
Todd Steiner, Executive Director
