The arrest and imprisonment of 28 Greenpeace activists in Russia has reached a dire climax. The activists — who were engaging in peaceful protest of gas drilling in the Arctic — are to be charged with piracy, which carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years. And this is after the Russian Coast Guard illegally seized the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise and threatened the lives of the activists.
It will take an international outcry to keep these brave activists out of prison. That's why our friends at Greenpeace are organizing a petition to the Russian ambassador to the United States.
This is an important campaign, so please take action with our friends at Greenpeace today to demand a release of the activists and an end to offshore drilling. Click here to sign the petition.
Thank you for speaking up for these brave activists.

Sign our petition today to Russia's US Ambassador demanding Russia immediately drop piracy charges against Greenpeace activists.
Fifteen armed Russian special forces agents descended from a helicopter, boarded and seized the Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise on September 19.
The ship was towed to the Russian city of Murmansk where, just last week, the 28 Greenpeace activists from around the world along with a freelance photographer and videographer who were onboard were charged with piracy by a Russian court. If convicted, each could face up tofifteen years in a Russian prison.
These activists urgently need your help.
Please sign our petition to Russia's US Ambassador demanding Russia immediate drop the charges of piracy, release the activists and put an end to offshore oil drilling in the Arctic for good.
This is the most serious threat to Greenpeace's environmental work since French secret service agents bombed and sunk the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior — killing a crew member — back in 1985.
But we didn't back down then and can't back down now — no matter how far those in power go to silence the people who speak out against Arctic oil drilling and environmental destruction. We can stop drilling in the Arctic just like we stopped French nuclear weapons testing three decades ago.
The right to peaceful protest is vital when governments fail to respond to issues climate change. It must be protected.
Sign our urgent petition to the Russian Ambassador and demand that Russia immediate drop the charges of piracy, release the activists and put an end to offshore oil drilling in the Arctic for good.
The activists need your support now more than ever. The environment needs your support more than ever. Please take action today.
For the Arctic and for the right to peaceful protest,
Greenpeace USA Campaign Director
P.S. It's going to take an international public outcry to get the piracy charges against Greenpeace activists dropped and to put an end to Arctic oil drilling. Please take action and forward this to your family and friends.
