Dear supporter, Add Wisconsin to the list of places where it's deadly to be a wolf. In just under three weeks, hunters and trappers in Wisconsin have killed off more than 193 wolves. Alarmingly, this means that more wolves have been killed in Wisconsin over the last few weeks than throughout the entire 2012 hunting and trapping seasons. This represents a disturbing trend of heightened anti-wolf attitudes and accelerated killing. As appalling as it may be, the state has authorized the killing of 251 wolves this year – nearly one-third of the state's entire wolf population. Step up and make your donation count! Members of our Board of Directors were so upset by this news they've offered to match your gift dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000! Please donate now and your donation will be doubled! State wildlife officials and state Wolf Advisory Committee members are working to drive down Wisconsin's wolf population to as low as 350! This is a frightening prospect, seeing that research done by University of Wisconsin biologists indicates that a population goal of 350 wolves would be difficult to maintain. Reports suggest that livestock and hunting and trapping interests have succeeded in taking over Wisconsin's state Wolf Advisory Committee. This committee makes recommendations on quotas, policies and even population goals. But independent scientific experts have been removed from the committee, while livestock and hunting and trapping interests have been added on – stacking the deck against wolves! No outside scientists are on the committee, and only one pro-wolf group is represented. There are, however, seven livestock, hunting and trapping groups represented! Help Defenders protect and restore gray wolves and other endangered wildlife by donating today! And, for the next 24 hours, your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $50,000! Defenders and Wolves We're working in the field and in Washington, DC to keep wolves thriving in our country: We're working to restore balance to the Wisconsin Wolf Advisory Committee to allow pro-wolf stakeholders to speak for wolves. We're suing to reverse the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's misguided decision to strip Wyoming's wolf population of Endangered Species Act protection back in 2012. We're leading the national campaign to prevent the proposed delisting of nearly all wolves in the lower 48 states. The carnage in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana – and now Wisconsin – is a heartbreaking preview of what life could be like for wolves across the country. We continue to pioneer new non-lethal strategies to prevent wolf attacks on sheep and other livestock.Your donation today will help Defenders take action wherever wolves, and other imperiled wildlife, are threatened.
We've come so far in our efforts to restore wolves to their historic range. But with anti-wolf forces more aggressive than ever, we're at a crossroads. Your help will never make a bigger difference. Thanks for all you do. For the wolves, Jamie Rappaport Clark President Defenders of Wildlife P.S. With your urgent donation, Defenders will be able to continue protecting and restoring gray wolves and other endangered wildlife across the country – please donate before tomorrow at midnight and have your gift matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000!
