Deeply impoverished villagers in India depend on working animals for their own existence, which can consist of one meager meal per day. But their desperation and ignorance of basic care cause both the animals and the owners to suffer. The loss of even one day's work means that a family will go hungry, so even injured and sick donkeys and bullocks are denied any rest and forced to keep working despite their pain.
That's where Animal Rahat can help. Staffed by a dedicated team of veterinarians and their assistants and scouts, Animal Rahat brings critical emergency relief to working animalsand also helps their owners, who often can't even afford to pay for the food that the animals need to maintain stamina and muscle.
PETA supports Animal Rahat's veterinary services for hardworking bullocks, donkeys, ponies, and horses as they struggle in the heat and dust of sugar cane mills and brick kilns.
Animal Rahat also teaches villagers about basic animal welfare, and its veterinarians are on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for emergency response. When animals are involved in accidents, Animal Rahat staff rush to the scene to treat them free of charge. Each day, Animal Rahat's ambulances attend to numerous emergencies, often traveling almost 100 miles on bumpy rural roads. And Animal Rahat is now expanding into the district of Satara, where its services are urgently needed. I was there just weeks ago and saw our vets rescue a horse whose right knee was swollen like an inflated balloon and who was being ridden hard, despite being in chronic pain and lame in all four legs!
Your support will also help Animal Rahat save animals through its animal-retirement program. Long-suffering working animals are often sold to butchers. To spare them what I can only describe from firsthand experience as a horrifying end—usually courtesy of a dull blade—Animal Rahat supplements animals' feed if the retired animals stay with their owners, or the owners can transfer the animals to Animal Rahat's wonderful retirement facility.
At the sanctuary, animals are free to lie down or graze all day long. They enjoy each other's company and relish the shade of the trees and specially built shelters.
Reaching all the animals who need help is a monumental task, but your monthly support will help Animal Rahat extend a lifeline where there is no other hope.
Thank you for all that you do for animals—every day!
